  85. Thanks for your input on cars etc. so far.

  87. I have narrowed my thinking to a small pickup or sport utility such as
  88. Bronco, Trooper, etc., probably 86 to 91.
  89.  
  90. I am told that American cars have less solid state devices to go awry
  91. due to RF from HF or VHF rigs, that Ford seems to be a good choice, that
  92. Japanese vehicles may be more susceptible to RF.
  93.  
  94. Again, besides physical comfort (my back) criteria include lack of problems
  95. from car to rig and vice versa, and other normal concerns.

  154.              Solar activity was low by virtue of a single,
  155.        uncorrelated C-class xray burst. Region 7690 (S15W54) was
  156.        numbered.
  157.  
  158.             Solar activity forecast:  solar activity is expected to be
  159.        very low to low. Regions 7688 (N19E47) and 7690 have the best
  160.        chance for C-class activity.
  161.  
  162.             The geomagnetic field has been at unsettled to minor
  163.        storm levels. High latitude stations saw major storm levels.
  164.        Energetic electron fluxes (GT 2 MeV) were at high levels during
  165.        the period.
  166.  
  167.             Geophysical activity forecast:  the geomagnetic field is
  168.        expected to be unsettled to active levels for the next 24 hours
  169.        then mostly unsettled for the remainder of the forecast period.
  170.        High latitude stations will experience minor storming for the
  171.        next 24 hours.

  305. Ussually the shape would be the Freq at the top of a curve at 6 db down over
  306. the frequency at the bottom of the curve at 60 db down. In other words if
  307. attenuation is 6 db at 4 mhz and 60 db at 8 mhz then the shape is 2 to 1. It
  308. can get more complicated that that but that is the idea.

  340. database is encrypted and Buckmaster will not provide the key so we can
  341. create a UNIX version of their ICALL.EXE program - if anyone knows how to
  342. decrypt this data, please contact us!) or you can TELNET to the Buffalo or
  343. NJIT callsign databases.

  576.  Amateur Radio operators have a tendency to use terms that are
  577. meaningless to others with whom they work (which leads to
  578. confusion) and even cases where Amateurs are not used due to that
  579. confusion. Accordingly, over the past two years a concerted
  580. effort to avoid certain words has paid off in many areas in those
  581. organizations cognizant of this aspect of interpersonal
  582. communication.

  584. Astute Amateurs do NOT say to the sheriff's deputy at the
  585. roadblock "I'm a ham radio operator in the RACES, or the Vista
  586. Radio Club." Rather, they reply "I'm with the Vista Country
  587. Emergency Management Agency reporting to my duty station."
  588.  
  589. Here, our  State Auxiliary Communications Service participants
  590. make a conscious effort to avoid these terms: Amateur, ham,
  591. ARES, ARRL, DEC, EC, RACES, SEC, section or emergency
  592. coordinator, and volunteer. Instead, they say they work for the
  593. Governor's Office of Emergency Services. If needed, they add that
  594. they work for the Telecommunications Branch. Rarely is it
  595. necessary to indicate in what capacity; but if needed, they  are
  596. FCC licensed communications specialists, not Amateur Radio
  597. operators.

  599. Recognition of how Amateurs deprecate themselves by their own
  600. terminology was emphasized by a California Department of Forestry
  601. official who pointedly requested that "Never say you are just a
  602. volunteer, or an Amateur. Say you are a CDF Fire Information
  603. Officer, for that is what you have been trained for, and are in
  604. fact."
  605.  
  606. The words YOU use DO make a difference in how YOU are perceived
  607. by other people. A poor choice of words (no matter how highly YOU
  608. think of them) can unknowingly convey a concept or picture that
  609. is totally at odds with what you THINK you conveyed!

  693. Thanks to all of you who have pointed out to me that ftp.std.com does in fact
  694. allow anonymous logins.  The first time I tried to login via anonymous to
  695. them, I got the message about paying for an account and then FTP promptly
  696. disconnected me - leading me to believe that a paid account was the only
  697. access they allowed.

  699. Someone pointed out via mail that the limit on anonymous logins may have
  700. been exceeded resulting in the ftp disconnection.
